\n<\/TABLE>Students in the 2006-2007 Biomedical Research Training Program (BRTP) recently took part in a three-day orientation process to help them select their area of interest for Ph.D. research. <\/p>\n

The BRTP, now entering its seventh year, is a common entry program for Ph.D. study in the College of Medicine and the Cancer Research Graduate Program. The purpose of the program is to recruit highly talented graduate students to enhance UNMC’s research mission and to provide students with the opportunity to select from a wide variety of laboratories before deciding upon their Ph.D. study laboratory and department. <\/p>\n

“We’re recruiting highly qualified students from across the country,” said Daniel Monaghan, Ph.D., BRTP director. <\/p>\n

Students entering the BRTP can rotate through any of the more than 115 research laboratories in five of the basic science departments (biochemistry and molecular biology; genetics, cell biology and anatomy; pathology and microbiology; pharmacology and experimental neuroscience; and cellular and integrative physiology), in affiliated laboratories in the departments of internal medicine, surgery and ophthalmology, and in the Cancer Research Graduate Program. <\/p>\n

Before the end of the first year, students select their thesis research laboratory and degree-granting program for continued study. The program is still undergoing rapid growth and has been fortunate in receiving applications from more than 88 US schools in 34 different states, Dr. Monaghan said.<\/p>\n
