{"id":27867,"date":"2007-02-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-02T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2007\/02\/02\/hiv-aids-in-the-black-community-focus-of-several-local-events\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:36:14","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:36:14","slug":"hiv-aids-in-the-black-community-focus-of-several-local-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2007\/02\/02\/hiv-aids-in-the-black-community-focus-of-several-local-events\/","title":{"rendered":"HIV\/AIDS in the black community focus of several local events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>A slate full of activities will be held in Omaha next week in conjunction National Black HIV\/AIDS Awareness Day, which is Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>The theme of the week&#8217;s activities &#8212; which include a prayer breakfast, a news conference and special HIV screenings &#8212; is to encourage people to &#8220;Get Educated, Get Tested, Get Treated and Get Involved&#8221; with HIV\/AIDS as it continues to devastate black communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nationally, 72 African Americans are infected with HIV every day,&#8221; said Mark Patten Sr., program manager for Nebraska AIDS Project. &#8220;African Americans make up approximately 13 percent of the population of the United States, yet almost half of the total AIDS cases reported in this country are among members of the black community. In 2006, HIV\/AIDS was one of the top ten leading causes of death for African Americans.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Omaha is one of more than 300 cities across the United States that will sponsor programs on Wednesday to call attention to the problem and seek solutions to halt the epidemic. In Omaha, 32 percent of people diagnosed with HIV\/AIDS are black. A startling number considering only 9 percent of the city&#8217;s population is black.<\/p>\n<p>Omaha activities planned in recognition of Black HIV\/AIDS Awareness Day include: <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI><B>Sunday<\/B> &#8212; Church announcements<br \/>\n<LI><B>Monday-Friday <\/B> &#8212; Free HIV screenings at Charles Drew Health Clinic, 2915 Grant St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 457-1208 for more information.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Wednesday <\/B> &#8212; Prayer breakfast hosted by Pastor Portia Cavitt of Allen AME Chapel and featuring Pastor Donald Archey, international best selling author of the book &#8220;Pastor, How Did You Get AIDS?&#8221; at Lake Pointe Building, 2401 Lake St., from 9 to 10 a.m. Rev. Archey was voted one of the top 50 most influential African Americans in Northeast Indiana. He is co-founder of the Archey AIDS Foundation.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Wednesday <\/B> &#8212; A news conference featuring Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey and other community leaders will be held at 10 a.m. at the Lake Pointe Building, 2401 Lake St.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Wednesday <\/B> &#8212; A town hall meeting featuring Archey will be held at Lake Pointe Building, 2401 Lake St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The meeting is free to the public and includes dinner. The theme is &#8220;Re-sound the Alarm: HIV\/AIDS in Black America.&#8221; A panel discussion will include Sharon Renter, executive director of Nebraska AIDS Project; Dr. Richard Brown, CEO\/executive director of Charles Drew Health Center; and Steven Jackson, HIV\/AIDS program manager for Nebraska Health and Human Services. Contact Mark Patten at 451-1066 for more information.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Thursday <\/B> &#8212; Free HIV screenings at the Urban League Family Resource Center at 30th and Lake streets from 3 to 7 p.m. Omaha radio station POWER 106.9 will host a live remote with door prizes and free movie passes included for the first 50 tested. Contact Mark Patten at 451-1066 for more information.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Friday <\/B> &#8212; A youth program titled &#8220;KIDZ LIV&#8217;N &#038; LOV&#8217;N in the BIG O: HIV\/AIDS, STDs and Youth&#8221; will be held at the Christ Child Daycare Center at 2211 Emmet St. from 6 to 9 p.m. The program will feature education, entertainment, door prizes and dinner. Contact Faye at 552-9260 for more information.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Friday <\/B> &#8212; Free anonymous HIV screenings at the Nebraska AIDS Project from 5 to 10 p.m. at 139 S. 40th St.<br \/>\n<LI><B>Saturday <\/B> &#8212; A free HIV education class, titled &#8220;26 YEARS of AIDS is ENOUGH,&#8221; will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Urban League Family Resource Center at 30th and Lake streets. <\/UL>         <\/p>\n<p>National Black HIV\/AIDS Awareness Day is directed and planned by seven national organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These groups work in partnership with local organizations and planners across the United States to ensure activities and events planned are successful and have the support they need.
