In the 1930s, Goodman — a native of south Omaha — traveled by cattle car to to Pebble Beach, Calif., and defeated Bobby Jones, who was considered the greatest golfer of the time.<\/p>\n

“It would be like some kid from south Omaha coming out of nowhere to beat Tiger Woods,” Kastrick said.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the country’s best golfers and competing around the world, Goodman never turned professional and remained in south Omaha as an insurance salesman.<\/p>\n

Kastrick is a life-long resident of south Omaha and teacher at South High School. During Tuesday’s lecture Kastrick talked about south Omaha’s history and how it became an essential part of the city. <\/p>\n

The lecture was part of a series related to UNMC’s partnership with the Durham Western Heritage Museum. Aside from bringing such events to campus, the partnership allows medical center students and employees to visit the museum and attend its functions free year round with valid identification.<\/p>\n
