The new names bring the college in line with national trends in naming academic nursing departments and signal the revitalized direction of the specialties within these departments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The department of community-based health specializes in four principal areas: <UL><LI>gerontological nursing;<br \/>\n<LI>psychosocial nursing;<br \/>\n<LI>community health nursing; and<br \/>\n<LI>the family nurse practitioner program.<\/UL> <\/p>\n<p>The name reflects inclusion of the family nurse practitioner program and the department&#8217;s community-based ties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The purpose of the name change is to provide more transparency in who we are,&#8221; said the department&#8217;s chairwoman, Mary Cramer, Ph.D. &#8220;My goal as chair is to see that department faculty is able to meet goals in the areas of research, teaching, and service.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The department of families and health systems has four nursing specialties:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>women&#8217;s health;<br \/>\n<LI>children&#8217;s health;<br \/>\n<LI>administration;<br \/>\n<LI>and informatics.<\/UL> <\/p>\n<p>The name was changed to provide more clarity about what the department does &#8212; which is prepare nurses to provide care to families and prepare leaders who develop, monitor and evaluate systems in which care is delivered.<\/p>\n<p>The department faculty promotes excellence through the scholarship of discovery, integration, teaching, and application, said department chairwoman Karen Grigsby, Ph.D. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The department also focuses on sustaining the integrity and visibility of its specialties and supports the professional growth of faculty, staff, and students,&#8221; Dr. Grigsby said.  &#8220;My role is to mentor, coach and provide the necessary resources for faculty to strive toward excellence in teaching, research and practice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\" e Uvo\"> e Uvo<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Nebraska Board of Regents recently approved the UNMC College of Nursing&#8217;s request to change the name of two of its three academic departments. &#8230; The gerontological, psychosocial and community health nursing department is now the department of community-based health and the parent-child, administration department is now the department of families and health systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":94,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30780","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","department-unmc-today-todays-headlines","author_override-alison-westcott-unmc-public-affairs-intern"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>UNMC College of Nursing changes two department names<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"The University of Nebraska Board of Regents recently approved the UNMC College of Nursing&#039;s request to change the name of two of its three academic departments. ...
