UNeMed’s Innovation Week activities start today at 11 a.m. in the Eppley Science Hall, Room 3010 with a lunch and learn presentation from small business technology transfer consultant Jean Waters. <\/p>\n

The week’s activities are meant to assist UNMC scientists in moving novel discoveries from the lab to the marketplace.<\/p>\n

Waters, a consultant with the Nebraska Business Development Center, will speak from 11 a.m. to noon. Audience members are encouraged to stay until 1 p.m. for questions and discussion. Box lunches will be provided.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the week’s activities will be Thursday when UNeMed — the technology commercialization arm for UNMC — recognizes individuals for their new inventions, patents and licensed technology at the 2007 Research Innovation Awards.<\/p>\n

The campus community is invited to attend all events, including Thursday’s awards ceremony, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. The ceremony will include comments from UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research, Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., UNeMed President Jim Linder, M.D., and Michael Dixon, Ph.D., director of intellectual property at UNeMed. <\/p>\n

Awards will be presented at 4:15 p.m. to individuals with new inventions, patents and licensed technology. A Lifetime Achievement Award also will be presented, followed by a reception in the DRC Atrium.<\/p>\n

Innovation Week activities are as follows:<\/p>\n

Monday, Aug. 20<\/B> — A lunch and learn presentation with Jean Waters, a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) consultant with the Nebraska Business Development Center. Waters’ presentation will be in Eppley Science Hall, Room 3010, from 11 a.m. to noon. Audience members are encouraged to stay until 1 p.m. for questions and discussion. Box lunches will be provided.<\/p>\n

Tuesday, Aug. 21<\/B> — UNeMed will have an informational table in the Durham Research Center atrium between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. UNeMed staff members will be on hand to answer questions and provide information. Free UNeMed T-shirts will be given to the first 50 graduate students and\/or post docs that stop by the table. Other give-a-ways and information also will be available.<\/p>\n

Thursday, Aug. 23<\/B> — The 2007 Research Innovation Awards ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. in the DRC Auditorium. A reception will follow in the DRC atrium.<\/p>\n

Friday, Aug. 24<\/B> — A lunch and learn presentation with Kate Rigaut, Ph.D., J.D., a patent attorney and partner at Dann Dorfman Herrell and Skillman PC in Philadelphia. In addition to her Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular genetics, Dr. Rigaut has extensive experience prosecuting biomedical patents for clients nationwide. She will present “From the bench to the patent office … What the inventor needs to know,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the DRC Auditorium. Pizza and cold refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n
