{"id":31084,"date":"2007-10-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2007\/10\/24\/a-decade-of-milestones\/"},"modified":"2007-10-24T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-24T05:00:00","slug":"a-decade-of-milestones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2007\/10\/24\/a-decade-of-milestones\/","title":{"rendered":"A decade of milestones"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/UNMCLogo.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><\/p>\n<p>The following are some of the milestones achieved at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center in the 10 years since the two entities merged.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/TNMCLogo.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><\/p>\n<p><B>2007<\/B><\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>Plans for The Nebraska Medical Center&#8217;s Clinical Cancer Center in west Omaha are announced.<br \/>\n<LI>Ground breaks on the Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation.<br \/>\n<LI>The Nebraska Medical Center receives Medicare certification for heart transplantation.<br \/>\n<LI>Ground breaks on Bellevue Medical Center.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2006<\/B><\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center have a $1.5 billion economic impact on Nebraska, supporting 17,100 jobs.<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC opens new facility for Autism Spectrum Disorders.<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC breaks ground on second research tower and opens the College of Public Health. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2005<\/B><\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>The Hixson-Lied Center opens.<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC Eppley Cancer Center initiates statewide lung cancer screenings.<br \/>\n<LI>The Nebraska Medical Center&#8217;s heart transplant program is revived and the hospital becomes the first in Nebraska to perform more than 12 transplants in one year. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2004<\/B><\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>Liver transplant No. 2,000 is performed at The Nebraska Medical Center.<br \/>\n<LI>Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson donate $5 million to the NU Foundation to create a comprehensive outpatient center focused exclusively on women&#8217;s health.<br \/>\n<LI>Virginia-Nebraska Alliance created with UNMC, Virginia Commonwealth University, five Historically Black Colleges and Universities and community colleges.<br \/>\n<LI>The Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital opens. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2003<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>UNMC&#8217;s Durham Research Center opens. <LI>UNMC, Creighton University Medical Center, The Nebraska Medical Center and State of Nebraska partner to create the Nebraska Regional Poison Center.<br \/>\n<LI>The Nebraska Health System becomes The Nebraska Medical Center. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2002<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>The Nebraska Epilepsy Program opens at UNMC\/The Nebraska Medical Center. <LI>U.S. Department of Defense awards UNMC $1 million to conduct research targeted toward lessening the harmful effects of chemical warfare agents.<br \/>\n<LI>Nine adult transplants and one pediatric transplant in a 36-hour period at The Nebraska Medical Center. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2001<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>Glenn Fosdick becomes president and CEO of The Nebraska Medical Center. <LI>Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., named first UNMC vice chancellor of research and John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., named dean of the College of Medicine. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>2000<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>UNMC Eppley Cancer Center earns Clinical Cancer Center designation.<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC College of Nursing launches online bachelor of science in nursing and master&#8217;s degree programs.<br \/>\n<LI>The hospital becomes the first in Nebraska to offer intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat cancer. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>1999<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>The Lied Transplant Center opens.<br \/>\n<LI>Tree of Life campaign launched in 20 cities to raise awareness for organ donation.<br \/>\n<LI>Connector hallway between University and Clarkson Towers opens. <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><B>1998<\/B> <\/p>\n<p><UL><LI>Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is  named the seventh UNMC chancellor.   <LI>Outpatient Care Center named Durham Outpatient Center in honor of Chuck and Margre Durham.<br \/>\n<LI>Nebraska&#8217;s first set of
