{"id":31454,"date":"2008-01-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-15T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2008\/01\/15\/dna-repair-system-explored-in-study\/"},"modified":"2008-01-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-15T06:00:00","slug":"dna-repair-system-explored-in-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2008\/01\/15\/dna-repair-system-explored-in-study\/","title":{"rendered":"DNA repair system explored in study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"100\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bessho108.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"1\"><br \/>\nTadayoshi Bessho, Ph.D.<br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>A key to repairing harmful damage in DNA was found through a recent Eppley Institute study. <\/p>\n<p>Research by Tadayoshi Bessho, Ph.D., assistant professor, and his group identifies an enzyme, XPF-ERCC1, as the first responder to a unique type of DNA damage called DNA interstrand cross-link.  <\/p>\n<p>The study, &#8220;Processing of a psoralen DNA interstrand cross-link by XPF-ERCC1 complex in vitro,&#8221; will be published next month in the Journal for Biological Chemistry. <\/p>\n<p>The paper can now be accessed through the online version of the journal by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jbc.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/M708072200v1?maxtoshow=&amp;HITS=10&amp;hits=10&amp;RESULTFORMAT=&amp;author1=Fisher&amp;andorexactfulltext=and&amp;searchid=1&amp;FIRSTINDEX=0&amp;sortspec=relevance&amp;resourcetype=HWCIT\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">clicking here<\/a>. A graduate student in Dr. Bessho&#8217;s laboratory, Laura Fisher, is the first author of the paper.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is very little known about how DNA cross-links are repaired in human cells,&#8221; Dr. Bessho said. &#8220;This repair process involves multi-steps mediated by many different proteins. Laura found that while this enzyme cannot do all, it does initiate the repair process.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many chemotherapeutic agents produce DNA cross-links to kill cancer cells. During the treatment, some cancer cells become resistant to the agents by gaining an ability to repair the DNA cross-links efficiently. Knowing how this damage is repaired will help in developing better chemotherapeutics and regimen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bessho joined UNMC in 2003 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His research is funded through a five-year RO1 grant from the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.
