\n<\/TABLE>UNMC has been selected to join the likes of Harvard, Yale and Washington University on the Chinese Scholarship Council’s (CSC) list of preferred U.S. institutions for student exchanges. <\/p>\n

The CSC is a powerful, Beijing-based group that selects top graduate students from elite Chinese universities to participate in exchange and research programs at select U.S. institutions.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to be held in such high esteem by our Chinese colleagues,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. “China is a rapidly emerging market and it’s very important that we build solid reputations with scientists in that country. Being named to this list shows that the CSC values relationships with us, as well.” <\/p>\n

Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Don Leuenberger said UNMC has worked hard to build ties with Chinese institutions.<\/p>\n

“We have made concerted efforts to show our Chinese colleagues all the great things that are going on at UNMC,” Leuenberger said. “Being on this list is an indication that the CSC recognizes UNMC as a ranking health science center.” <\/p>\n

UNMC has hosted Chinese students for several years and next year the CSC will send between five and eight students to UNMC to participate in Ph.D. programs. <\/p>\n

“It is a great honor for us to be asked to receive this high number of their elite scholars, since we are competing against all other high level universities in the United States and around the world,” said Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., vice chancellor for research. “The CSC and other groups in China have recognized the high-quality of UNMC research and Ph.D. programs and have offered us as a prime destination for their students.”<\/p>\n

Leuenberger and Dr. Rosenquist both credited Jialin Zheng, M.D., who directs the UNMC Asian Pacific Rim Development Program, and his staff, for raising the medical center’s profile among Chinese institutions and the CSC.<\/p>\n

“Thanks to the tireless work of Dr. Zheng and others who have traveled to China on behalf of UNMC, or who have hosted high level Chinese visitors to UNMC, the CSC, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other groups in China have recognized UNMC as an elite U.S. institution,” Dr. Rosenquist said. <\/p>\n

UNMC is among just 14 U.S. institutions that have been invited to attend a CSC-sponsored planning conference in Beijing in October to advise the Chinese group in how to continue development of its international graduate studies program. <\/p>\n
