\n<\/TABLE>Twenty-two students from eight different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)\/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program. <\/p>\n

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research. <\/p>\n

Today, we meet Lokesh Kalekar, one of the new BRIN scholars on campus.<\/p>\n

What should we know about you? <\/B><\/p>\n

I am Lokesh Kalekar. I am from Nasik, India. My hobbies are writing and reading. My passions are music and science.<\/p>\n

What or who influenced your interest in science? <\/B><\/p>\n

The fact that better understanding of life is possible through the study of science influenced my interest in science.<\/p>\n

What is it about science that excites you? <\/B><\/p>\n

I think I am a very inquisitive person. The complex nature of science and the many questions it generates are very compelling to me.<\/p>\n

Will you pursue a career in science? If so, what do you hope to accomplish? <\/B><\/p>\n

I am planning to pursue a Ph.D. in neurosciences. I would like to contribute to a better understanding of neurodegenerative disorders.<\/p>\n

Why is it important to have programs like BRIN? <\/B><\/p>\n

Programs like BRIN prepare us for the very competitive world of science by providing a very nurturing research experience. They also help us in understanding our own capabilities and potential. <\/p>\n
