\n<\/TABLE>Mary Pat Pelini, wife of Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini, presented a check for $25,000 to UNMC Eppley Cancer Center Director Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., on Monday.<\/p>\n

The check came from proceeds raised during the Football 101 event held in Lincoln in June. <\/p>\n

The cause of cancer prevention and treatment hits home for the family, Pelini said, noting that her husband’s mother and sister both suffered from breast cancer. <\/p>\n

“Obviously it’s a cause that’s very close to our heart and that made it a cause that we very much wanted to contribute to,” Pelini said.<\/p>\n

Pelini, Connie Jamrog, wife of NU assistant athletic director for football, Jeff Jamrog; and Chris Anderson, NU associate athletic director for community relations; came to UNMC for the check presentation on Monday. <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>During their medical center visit, they heard a presentation by David Kelly, Ph.D., in the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center Automated High-Throughput Screening Facility, and toured a patient suite in the Lied Transplant Center.<\/p>\n

About 900 Nebraska football fans gathered for Football 101 to catch an early look of the Bo Pelini era at Nebraska and to support cancer research in the state. <\/p>\n

The charity event was sponsored by the Bo Pelini Foundation and the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center and raised nearly $40,000 to be dispersed between the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center. <\/p>\n

Since the start of the Football 101 program in 2004, more than $250,000 has been raised for cancer research. <\/p>\n

“We were thrilled that Mary Pat was able to visit the cancer center and see some of the work that is supported by Football 101,” Dr. Cowan said. “It’s a great program that’s a lot of fun for those who participate, and we truly appreciate the support it garners for our research.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
