Maurer, M.D., Nizar Mamdani, executive director of International Healthcare Services (IHS), and Glenn Fosdick, president and CEO of The Nebraska Medical Center, at a Sept. 10 event celebrating IHS&#8217; 10 year anniversary.<br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>It has been nine years since the International Healthcare Services (IHS) program began at The Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Since then the program has grown from just three partnerships to 118 agreements with major medical institutions in 44 countries.<\/p>\n<p>At a Sept. 10 luncheon celebrating the achievements of the program, Nizar Mamdani, executive director of IHS, thanked the numerous volunteers, hospital staff and UNMC officials who have made the program possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Without your help, this program would not be the success it is today,&#8221; Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>IHS has helped bring hundreds of patients from around the globe to Omaha for treatment at The Nebraska Medical Center, he said.<\/p>\n<p>It also has provided no cost training to 90 health care professionals from partner institutions, as well as more than 150 electronic consultations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The progress made from the early days of the program to now is just phenomenal,&#8221; said Bob Bell, vice president of UneMed Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Graham, chief operating officer for The Nebraska Medical Center, said he is particularly impressed with the outstanding customer service provided to patients and their families who come to Omaha for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The staff and volunteers take care to address any cultural needs or family issues as sensitively as possible,&#8221; Graham said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nizar has proven with this program that it is possible to do well while doing good,&#8221; said James Armitage, M.D., professor of internal medicine at UNMC. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has been nine years since the International Healthcare Services (IHS) program began at The Nebraska Medical Center.
