The 2-year training program qualifies individuals to sit for the examination to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (D[ABMM]). <\/p>\n<p>Individuals who successfully pass the examination are subsequently recognized as board certified and eligible to direct a clinical microbiology laboratory.   <\/p>\n<p>The program at UNMC is specifically organized to train fellows to become directors of diagnostic microbiology laboratories and leaders who have a strong desire to pursue future activities as they pertain to public health and clinical microbiology.<\/p>\n<p>The CPEP-accredited program is sponsored by the Department of Pathology and Microbiology in collaboration with The Nebraska Medical Center. Affiliates of the program include Creighton University Medical Center and the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.  <\/p>\n<p>The co-directors of the UNMC CPEP-approved training program are Steven Hinrichs, M.D., chairman of the department of pathology and microbiology, and Peter Iwen, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and microbiology.<\/p>\n<p>Additional faculty members from pathology and microbiology, infectious diseases, pharmacy, and health care epidemiology also will participate in the training.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Iwen also made special mention of Baha Abdalhamid, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC&#8217;s inaugural post-doctoral fellow in the training program, for his work to support the medical center&#8217;s accreditation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Abdalhamid has been instrumental in helping us prepare to become an approved training site,&#8221; said Dr. Iwen, who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology. <\/p>\n<p>Additional information about the training program can
