Video of Thursday&#8217;s ceremony can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/hog.unmc.edu:8080\/ramgen\/publicaffairs\/matchday031909.rm\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>After 40 years, Kim Bauman still dreams of being a doctor. <\/p>\n<p>Marriage, two children and an 11-year career as a biology teacher in Gothenburg may have delayed her dream a bit &#8212; but it did not diminish it.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Bauman reached a milestone in her quest to make her dream a reality when she learned she would serve a family medicine residency at Lincoln Medical Education Partnership. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been my lifelong goal,&#8221; the fourth-year medical student said. &#8220;And the time is right for it to happen.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Bauman and 114 other UNMC medical students learned where they will serve residencies during Thursday&#8217;s Match Day ceremony in the Sorrell Center. <\/p>\n<p>During her years as a high school biology teacher in Gothenburg, Bauman taught students who would go on to medical school. One of her students currently is a third-year medical student at UNMC. <\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, the teacher decided to become a student again. She had last been a pupil in 1997 when she earned a master&#8217;s degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. <\/p>\n<p>As she attended med school in Omaha, Bauman&#8217;s husband Joe, and their two children, Colton and Carly, would remain back on the family&#8217;s cattle farm near Gothenburg. <\/p>\n<p>Bauman would return on the weekends &#8212; where she would find escape from medical school by fully engaging in her role as &#8220;mom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d bring my books home, but they hardly ever got opened,&#8221; Bauman said. <\/p>\n<p>Last year &#8212; on top of her other responsibilities &#8212; Bauman gave birth to a third child &#8212; a boy named Cameron. <\/p>\n<p>The family will join Bauman in Lincoln as she serves her residency, a change that may prove to be a significant adjustment for Joe, a lifelong cattle farmer. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really a cowboy,&#8221; Joe Bauman said. &#8220;So Lincoln may take some getting used to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some folks who are familiar with Lincoln, and each other for that matter, are Eric and Ashley Schneider, Amit Chakraborty, Brian Butler, Quinton Kelly and Steve Viljoen.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"15\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s been my lifelong goal. And the time is right for it to happen.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"1\"><br \/>\nKim Bauman<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>All six attended Lincoln East High School together &#8212; and Ashley Schneider, Chakraborty and Butler attended the same capitol city elementary school.  <\/p>\n<p>Years later they met up again at UNMC and on Thursday they each learned where their individual paths will lead next. <\/p>\n<p>The Schneiders will each serve residencies at UNMC; Ashley in pathology and Eric in emergency medicine.  <\/p>\n<p>Chakraborty will serve a one-year internal medicine preliminary residency at St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor, Mich., before he returns to UNMC for a radiology residency. <\/p>\n<p>Kelly will join Chakraborty at the Ann Arbor hospital where he will undertake a one-year transitional year before he goes to Milwaukee for a diagnostic radiology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. <\/p>\n<p>Butler is headed to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego for an internal medicine residency.<\/p>\n<p>Viljoen is bound for Iowa City, Iowa, for a neurosurgery residency at the University of Iowa Clinics. <\/p>\n<p>Joel Strauch &#8212; who before medical school spent one year teaching English at a Korean university and four years as a journalist for a computer game magazine in California &#8212; was relieved Thursday when he learned his &#8220;suicide match&#8221; had panned out. <\/p>\n<p>Strauch called his match such because he applied for only one residency &#8212; a psychiatry position with the Creighton-Nebraska Health Foundation. He did so because he wanted to stay in Omaha to be with his wife, first-year medical student Dawn Strauch. <\/p>\n<p>If he hadn&#8217;t received his match, Strauch would have had to scramble to find residency options &#8212; which can be a difficult proposition. <\/p>\n<p>Following an embrace, the couple simply smiled and nodded when asked if they were relieved Joel had indeed landed the Omaha residency. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app1.unmc.edu\/PublicAffairs\/TodaySite\/images\/siteimages\/2009QuickMATCHLIST.pdf\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a> to see a complete list of all the UNMC medical students who matched with residency programs on Thursday.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"nRff krPAeDTEb hhmw Ejs \"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After 40 years, Kim Bauman still dreams of being a doctor.
