At the symposium, Dr. Freeman &#8212; a Georgetown University anesthesiologist who wrote &#8220;The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Medical Specialty&#8221; &#8212; discussed the importance of each individual finding the right medical specialty.<br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ResAdv0918.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"1\"><br \/>\nJeff Hill, M.D., associate dean for admissions and student affairs, speaks at the residency symposium.<br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>More than 350 students from five Midwest universities gained insight into the residency process during the 14th biennial Residency Symposium.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the UNMC Student American Medical Association, the April 25 symposium marked the largest to date, said fourth-year medical student Boyd Viers, who led the daylong, student-organized event. <\/p>\n<p>Given every two years since 1985, the symposium provides second- and third-year medical students information on how to choose a residency and how to be successful in the residency match after medical school. This year&#8217;s participants came from UNMC, Creighton University, the University of South Dakota, the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas University. <\/p>\n<p>During the symposium, keynote speaker Brian Freeman, M.D., a Georgetown University anesthesiologist who wrote &#8220;The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Medical Specialty,&#8221; emphasized the importance of choosing the best medical specialty for each person.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC faculty members Robert Wigton, M.D., and Jeff Hill, M.D., provided insight on what residencies look for in their applicants and how to compose the best application possible for each residency. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was extremely lucky to have a committee of UNMC students that were very compassionate about this event,&#8221; Viers said. &#8220;They put a
