\n<\/TABLE>School may be out for summer but there will still be plenty to learn at the next Omaha Science Cafe<\/a>, which will be held Tuesday at the Slowdown<\/a>, 729 N. 14th St. in Omaha.<\/p>\n

During the event, which starts at 7 p.m., Dan Anderson, M.D, Ph.D., assistant professor of cardiology, will present “Diet, Exercise, Inflammation and Heart Disease: What’s the Connection.” <\/p>\n

Currently an electrophysiology staff member, he received his M.D. and Ph.D. at UNMC. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Electrophysiology.<\/p>\n

He is funded by the National American Heart Association to study and evaluate the inflammatory mechanisms of heart disease and the non-invasive detection of vascular injury. He has published multiple peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and presented his research findings at numerous research forums both locally and nationally. <\/p>\n

\nThe first Lincoln Science Cafe was held Thursday, May 14, at red9. Eighty people were in attendance as Sanjay Singh, M.D., director of the Nebraska Epilepsy Center and associate professor of neurological sciences, discussed how the brain works. More about future Lincoln Science Cafes will be published in UNMC Today.

\n<\/TABLE>Dr. Anderson’s personal journey with diet and exercise and his practice was featured in a news story on the KETV in 2008. <\/p>\n

Science Cafes are hosted by UNMC, BioNebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures and are part of an effort to increase the population’s science literacy. <\/p>\n

A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. The Science Cafes present science in a casual setting in an effort to introduce and get young adults interested in science. <\/p>\n

More than 200 people attended May’s Science Cafe in Omaha, which featured Kendra Schmid, Ph.D., assistant professor of biostatistics in the College of Public Health at UNMC, and her presentation on “the science of attractiveness.” <\/p>\n
