    “Leadership is enhanced through passion and relationships,” Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., recently told 48 graduates of UNMC’s 2009 Management Series. <\/p>\n

    He encouraged the graduates to be invested in relationships and engagement both within the community as well as the workplace.<\/p>\n

    The eight-month management series provides UNMC supervisors, managers and administrators the tools to become highly effective leaders and an understanding of UNMC policies and procedures. <\/p>\n

    Sponsored by UNMC Human Resources, with assistance from the Center for Continuing Education, the UNMC Management Series covered such topics as:
    \n

    • Leadership;
      \n
    • Communication;
      \n
    • Compliance;
      \n
    • Teamwork;
      \n
    • Managing change;
      \n
    • Performance management;
      \n
    • Employee motivation; and
      \n
    • Diversity.<\/UL> <\/p>\n

      “The program has been designed to give managers and supervisors the tools to succeed in their positions, as well as engage their staff,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, division director of human resources’ employee relations and organizational development. “The support of UNMC’s upper level management to this program is outstanding and one example of how UNMC invests in its employees.” <\/p>\n

      In addition to Dr. Maurer, the following campus leaders mentored participants while sharing personal experiences for successful management and leadership:
      \n

      • Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs;
        \n
      • David Crouse, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor and executive associate dean for Graduate Studies
        \n
      • Don Leuenberger, vice chancellor for business and finance;
        \n
      • Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., chairman and president of UNMC Physicians;
        \n
      • Myrna Newland M.D., director of the UNMC Equity Office;
        \n
      • John Russell, assistant vice chancellor for human resources; and
        \n
      • Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the College of Nursing.<\/UL><\/p>\n

        Additionally, UNMC’s Bruce Gordan, M.D., Sheila Wrobel, J.D., and Susan Kraft Mann led monthly interactive discussions and were joined by external consultants Cy Wakeman, Pam Evers, Brian Brim and Heather Wright of the Gallup Organization, and Patique Collins of the SilverStone Group.<\/p>\n

        “One of the key concepts in the UNMC Management Series is that everyone on campus is called to be a leader,” said Linda Love, faculty development coordinator with the Center for Continuing Education. “Through the sessions and discussions, participants had the opportunity to reflect upon their skills, strengths and challenges and gain a sense of empowerment in how they can impact the culture at UNMC.” <\/p>\n

        Here’s what some 2009 management series participants had to say about the experience: <\/B><\/p>\n

        “This is a very good program, the speakers were all great, informative and provided useful information and management techniques.”<\/p>\n
