The Science Cafes are part of an effort by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, BioNebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month.<\/p>\n

\nMellissa Helligso received her bachelor’s degree in medical technology from UNMC and will receive her Master’s of Forensic Science from Nebraska Wesleyan University this December. <\/p>\n

She works as a DNA analyst in the molecular diagnostics section of the Department of Pathology\/Microbiology at UNMC. She has more than 10 years of experience in performing forensic DNA testing for hundreds of criminal cases in Omaha and the surrounding areas. One of the most memorable is the Christopher Edwards case, in which she testified to her DNA analysis regarding the disappearance and murder of Jessica O’Grady.

\n<\/TABLE>A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. <\/p>\n

The goal of the Science Cafes is to introduce and get young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting. <\/p>\n
