{"id":35079,"date":"2009-09-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/09\/02\/new-hospital-program-offers-cancer-patients-legal-help\/"},"modified":"2009-09-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-02T05:00:00","slug":"new-hospital-program-offers-cancer-patients-legal-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/09\/02\/new-hospital-program-offers-cancer-patients-legal-help\/","title":{"rendered":"New hospital program offers cancer patients legal help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RodabaughKerry909.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt; line-height:150%;\">Kerry Rodabaugh, M.D.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>The last thing that a hospitalized patient who is battling serious cancer needs is a thorny legal problem. <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a unique medical-legal partnership between Legal Aid of Nebraska and The Nebraska Medical Center, a legal problem, in fact, is the last thing many cancer patients will have to stew about.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership was the brainchild of Kerry Rodabaugh, M.D., associate professor in obstetrics-gynecology for UNMC and a gynecological oncologist at The Nebraska Medical Center who moved to Omaha after practicing in Buffalo, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I found myself taking care of women with recurrrent cervical cancer, and when it&#8217;s recurrent, it&#8217;s usually terminal,&#8221; Dr. Rodabaugh said. &#8220;Many of these women were single parents with young children and had no legal arrangements in place for the children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So Dr. Rodabaugh pioneered a medical-legal partnership in Buffalo to handle many of the problems cancer patients would encounter:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Custody issues;<br \/>\n<LI>Powers of attorney;<br \/>\n<LI>Foreclosures; and<br \/>\n<LI>Benefit advocacy.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>So convinced of the program&#8217;s effectiveness, Dr. Rodabaugh attempted to set up a similar program as soon as she arrived in Omaha. Last year she attended a conference where she met Legal Aid Executive Director Dave Pantos. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Rodabaugh told me about her experience with a successful medical-legal partnership for cancer patients and it made perfect sense that a similar program could work well in Omaha,&#8221; Pantos said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This shows that we&#8217;re paying attention to the entire patient,&#8221; Dr. Rodabaugh said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not just taking care of cancer with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. We&#8217;re addressing everything else that goes into the treatment of the individual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Legal Aid of Nebraska and The Nebraska Medical Center agreement was approved and launched early this summer. A Legal Aid attorney always is available to consult on issues over the phone and visits the hospital and its clinics once a week. There, attorney Ann Mangiameli meets at the bedside with cancer patients to work through their legal issues. <\/p>\n<p>So far, both partners consider the process a great success.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"15\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\n&#8220;This shows that we&#8217;re paying attention to the entire patient. We&#8217;re not just taking care of cancer with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. We&#8217;re addressing everything else that goes into the treatment of the individual.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"1\"><br \/>\nKerry Rodabaugh, M.D.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>&#8220;The Nebraska Medical Center is heavily involved and supportive of this program,&#8221; Pantos said. &#8220;The medical center&#8217;s social work staff, the oncology-hematology department and many other groups are totally invested and their cancer patients are the ultimate winners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Legal Aid Assistant Director Annette Farnan said the partnership also has been positive for The Nebraska Medical Center patients from outside of Nebraska, particularly Iowa. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many cancer patients come to the medical center from western Iowa, so we brought in Legal Aid of Iowa as an unfunded partner,&#8221; Farnan said. &#8220;I would not be surprised if the idea catches on so well there that they develop their own medical &#8212; legal partnership at Iowa&#8217;s top hospitals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good program for everyone
