{"id":35373,"date":"2009-10-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-23T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/10\/23\/dr-ahmad-led-team-makes-major-stem-cell-research-breakthrough\/"},"modified":"2009-10-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-10-23T05:00:00","slug":"dr-ahmad-led-team-makes-major-stem-cell-research-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/10\/23\/dr-ahmad-led-team-makes-major-stem-cell-research-breakthrough\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Ahmad-led team makes major stem cell research breakthrough"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>A UNMC research team led by Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, has &#8220;reprogrammed&#8221; regular body cells to resemble embryonic stem cells without the use of potentially harmful foreign genetic material. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSIqbal208.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt; line-height:150%;\">Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., led a UNMC research team that has found a way to make normal cells act as stem cells by altering the environment in which the normal cells are cultured. This would allow scientists to create the stem cells without introducing foreign genetic material into the normal cells, which leads to immunity issues. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>The research, published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/journal\/121607285\/grouphome\/home.html\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM CELLS<\/a>, suggests that cells taken from a patient&#8217;s eye can be reprogrammed to replace or restore cells lost to degenerative diseases. <\/p>\n<p>The research is the first proof in principle that somatic, or body cells, can be transformed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) simply through the influence of the microenvironment in which the sampled cells are cultured. Previously, genetic materials were introduced into somatic cells to reprogram them to become stem cells. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings provide evidence for an emerging view that somatic cells may be reprogrammed safely and simply by defined chemicals and other factors, which may facilitate their clinical use,&#8221; Dr. Ahmad said. &#8220;The next step is to know how robust the reprogramming is and what existed within the microenvironment to cause it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ahmad said his findings wouldn&#8217;t have been possible without embryonic stem cell research. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"D1D4D3\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nResearch support<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\nDr. Ahmad&#8217;s research was supported by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>&#8220;It must be emphasized that this development is directly related to embryonic stem cell research and the knowledge we have acquired from it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We need to know how embryonic stem cells induced adult stem cells to function like themselves, and we can&#8217;t know this if we don&#8217;t continue with embryonic stem cell research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"100\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Sudha1009.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt; line-height:150%;\">Sudha Balasubramanian, Ph.D., a former post doc in Dr. Ahmad&#8217;s laboratory, did work that was essential to the team&#8217;s findings. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>The team sampled progenitor eye cells, which regenerate the eye&#8217;s cornea, from laboratory rats. The cells were reprogrammed to resemble stem cells and they acquired the properties necessary to replace or restore cell types that degenerate in Parkinson&#8217;s disease, heart disease and liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>This technique may allow &#8216;autologous cell transplantation,&#8217; where the donor of the cells also is the recipient. This is preferable to using cells from another person, which may cause the patient&#8217;s immune system to reject the transplanted cells. <\/p>\n<p>The efforts of Sudha Balasubramanian, Ph.D., a former post doc in his laboratory, were essential to this team&#8217;s findings, Dr. Ahmad said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She absolutely carried this project on her shoulders and this work couldn&#8217;t have
