UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. <\/p>\n

The designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>The medical center bariatric surgery program — the largest in Omaha and Lincoln — has treated 1,550 patients since 1992. The program offers gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric band surgeries. All can be done with laparoscopic, minimally invasive approaches.<\/p>\n

“We are honored to receive this designation,” said Corrigan McBride, M.D., associate professor of general surgery at UNMC and a bariatric surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. <\/p>\n

To earn a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation, the medical center underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected. <\/p>\n

The program is staffed by four surgeons, two physician’s assistants, two registered nurses, dieticians and a psychologist.<\/p>\n
