UNMC’s Paul Paulman, M.D., and Bud Shaw, M.D., have received universitywide awards for teaching and innovation respectively, University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken, J.D., announced on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Dr. Paulman, professor of family medicine and assistant dean for clinical skills, received the Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (OTICA).<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw, professor of surgery and medical director of the UNMC Advanced Clinical Application Project, received the Innovation, Development and Engagement Award (IDEA). <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>“It’s important that we take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding work done by our faculty members,” Milliken said. “The strength of the University depends on its faculty, and we have some of the country’s best on our campuses. Their efforts in teaching, research and engagement make a real difference in people’s lives.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Paulman, referred to by his nominator as “a teacher’s teacher,” is active on many levels of education in the College of Medicine including:
\n

  • Supervising medical students’ rural health care experience in Jamaica;
    \n
  • Founding and assisting with the student-run SHARING Clinics; and
    \n
  • Directing the Sorrell Center Clinical Skills Laboratory.<\/UL><\/p>\n

    Dr. Paulman also has authored multiple books on the teaching of family medicine.<\/p>\n

    Dr. Shaw was founder of UNMC’s renowned solid organ transplant program. Under his leadership:
    \n

    • The liver transplant program became one of the world’s best;
      \n
    • The kidney transplant program expanded; and
      \n
    • New services were added for pancreas, small bowel and heart transplants.<\/UL><\/p>\n

      In 1993, he was one of the founders of HKS Medical Information Systems, a company dedicated to software products that improve patient care, workflow management and operational efficiency. The company’s first software, Organ Transplant Tracking Record (OTTR), and its companion programs still are the most-used patient tracking software for transplantation in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
