{"id":36576,"date":"2010-05-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/05\/24\/a-special-delivery-for-regent-hassebrook\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:12:58","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:12:58","slug":"a-special-delivery-for-regent-hassebrook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/05\/24\/a-special-delivery-for-regent-hassebrook\/","title":{"rendered":"A special delivery for Regent Hassebrook"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>As he headed to UNMC Friday morning for a University of Nebraska Board of Regents&#8217; meeting at the medical center, Chuck Hassebrook had no idea he would deliver his first baby that day.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, so it wasn&#8217;t a real baby but rather a simulated infant that is part of the &#8220;Noelle&#8221; birthing simulator in the Sorrell Center&#8217;s Clinical Skills Lab. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"B1D1E2\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nHandled with care<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" align=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?group_id=&#038;user_id=8414512@N05&#038;set_id=72157623984314361&#038;tags=Cars,Lotus,Exige\" frameBorder=\"0\" width=\"350\" height=\"325\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><B>The slideshow above features images of Regent Chuck Hassebrook delivering a simulated infant in the Sorrell Center on Friday.<\/B><br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>But it was real enough for the regent from Lyons, Neb.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I ever get stuck in a elevator with a woman giving birth I would at least have a clue about what to do,&#8221; said Hassebrook, who helped pull calves when he was younger but said the simulated infant presented an altogether different challenge. <\/p>\n<p>Cheered on by other regents, NU President James B. Milliken and UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and guided by family medicine&#8217;s David Harnisch, M.D., Hassebrook helped bring the plastic infant into the world &#8230; for the second time in five minutes; Dr. Harnish had demonstrated a delivery before Hassebrook took his turn. <\/p>\n<p>Hassebrook&#8217;s first delivery came as part of day&#8217;s worth of events at UNMC for the regents. <\/p>\n<p>While they toured campus Friday, they also:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Received an update from Dr. Maurer on the campus&#8217; strategic direction, health care reform&#8217;s potential impact on the campus and the financial risk profile for the campus going forward;<br \/>\n<LI>Heard about new nursing education initiatives from College of Nursing Dean Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc.;<br \/>\n<LI>Visited with UNMC infectious diseases experts Steve Hinrichs, M.D., Ken Bayles, Ph.D., and Mark Rupp, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Participated in a panel discussion with several UNMC graduate students;<br \/>\n<LI>Heard a presentation by Tony Hollingsworth, Ph.D., about UNMC&#8217;s latest efforts to fight pancreatic cancer;<br \/>\n<LI>Talked with Cory Shaw of UNMC Physicians and Joe Graham of The Nebraska Medical Center about the medical center&#8217;s plans to confront health care reform; and<br \/>\n<LI>Discussed cutting-edge vision research with Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., and Eyal Margalit,
