Four researchers will receive 2010 Internal Medicine Research Awards today for exceptional achievements in research. <\/p>\n

The awards will be presented today during the special internal medicine grand rounds at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. <\/p>\n

\nStephen Bonasera, M.D., will receive the Internal Medicine Basic Science Research Award today, then he will present a special grand rounds on his research. <\/span>
\n<\/TD>
\n<\/TR>
\n<\/TABLE>Posters will be on display outside of the auditorium starting at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

At the ceremony:
\n

  • Stephen Bonasera, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/B> assistant professor of geriatrics, will receive the Internal Medicine Basic Science Research Award;
    \n
  • Shannon Wakeley, M.D.,<\/B> endocrinology fellow, will receive the Internal Medicine Fellowship Research Award;
    \n
  • Warren Ancheta Thorp, M.D.,<\/B> house officer II, will receive the Internal Medicine Resident Research Award; and
    \n
  • Nobuhiro Kanaji, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/B> a research associate in the section of pulmonary, critical care, sleep, and allergy medicine, will receive the Laureate Award for a Visiting Scientist.<\/UL><\/p>\n

    Dr. Bonasera<\/B> will be honored for his aging research, for which he has earned several awards including a National Institutes of Aging R01 grant.<\/p>\n

    Dr. Wakeley<\/B> has earned praise for taking on a research project into gene expression in thyroid cancer cells and obtaining meaningful results.<\/p>\n

    Dr. Ancheta<\/B> independently enrolled a total of 50 patients and secured intramural funding for his study titled “Vitamin D Levels in Subjects with Chronic Urticaria and Angioedema” during his one-month research rotation. <\/p>\n

    Dr. Nobuhiro Kanaji,<\/B> a visiting scientist from Takamatsu, Japan, has worked successfully on two distinct projects regarding endothelial cells since his arrival at UNMC in October 2007. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
