They are naturally-occurring in all people and their rate of progression varies greatly from person to person. Some people develop cataracts when they are in their 40s while others will live into their 90s and do not develop cataracts. Researchers, including UNMC&#8217;s Toshimichi Shinohara, Ph.D., are looking into ways to prevent and slow the progression of cataracts, but to this point no proven methods have been developed. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"EAE4A9\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nLearn more online<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/health\/cataract\/cataract_facts.asp\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit a National Eye Institute webpage about cataracts<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><B>How are cataracts treated? <\/B> <\/p>\n<p>The only treatment is a surgical procedure in which the hazy lens is replaced by a plastic lens implant. It&#8217;s an outpatient procedure that is done in 15 to 30 minutes and the implants will last for life. <\/p>\n<p><B>How does one determine when to have surgery? <\/B><\/p>\n<p>Basically a patient decides when to have the surgery.
