{"id":37038,"date":"2010-08-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/08\/26\/author-neuroscientist-to-speak-about-music-and-the-brain\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:19:51","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:19:51","slug":"author-neuroscientist-to-speak-about-music-and-the-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/08\/26\/author-neuroscientist-to-speak-about-music-and-the-brain\/","title":{"rendered":"Author\/neuroscientist to speak about music and the brain"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"EAE4A9\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nFollow-up sessions<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p>Two follow-up, Q&amp;A panels at the KANEKO &#8212; on Wednesday, Sept. 22, and Monday, Oct. 18 &#8212; will be held following Dr. Levitin&#8217;s visit.  <\/p>\n<p>The informal panels, titled &#8220;Conversations with UNMC Neuroscientists,&#8221; will highlight neurosciences at UNMC and begin at 6 p.m. at KANEKO.  <\/p>\n<p>Scheduled to participate on Sept. 22 are:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Sanjay Singh, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Dan Murman, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Chris Kratochvil, M.D.; and<br \/>\n<LI>Michele Aizenberg Ansari, M.D.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>The panelists on Oct. 18 will be:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>William Burke, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Howard Gendelman, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Diego Torres-Russotto, M.D.;<br \/>\n<LI>Wayne Fisher, Ph.D.; and<br \/>\n<LI>William Thorell, M.D.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>The panelists will answer questions from a moderator as well as from the audience. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have some of the world&#8217;s leading experts in various areas of neuroscience here at UNMC, and this is a great venue to share their information with the public,&#8221; said UNMC&#8217;s Jim Linder, M.D., who along with his wife, Karen, is sponsoring Dr. Levitin&#8217;s visit.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>Daniel Levitin, Ph.D., helped produce records by the Blue Oyster Cult and Chris Isaak and he&#8217;s been a recording engineer for Santana and the Grateful Dead.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s also a cognitive neuroscientist who wrote two best-selling books on music and the brain &#8212; a topic he will speak about at UNMC on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.<\/p>\n<p><B>Coinciding event<\/B><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Levitin&#8217;s presentation at UNMC coincides with his performance at 7:30 p.m. that evening with Grammy Award winner Roseanne Cash at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thekaneko.org\/\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">KANEKO<\/a>, 1111 Jones St.  The UNMC College of Medicine, as well as Dr. Jim and Karen Linder, are sponsoring Dr. Levitin&#8217;s visit to Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a wonderful opportunity for UNMC faculty, staff and students to hear from a leading scientist who is known in both the scientific world and in the public for his work on cognitive psychology and brain function,&#8221; said Dr. Linder, chief executive officer of UNeMed and professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p><B>Changed perceptions<\/B><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Levitin is credited with changing the way scientists think about auditory memory. <\/p>\n<p>Currently a professor of psychology and behavior neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Levitin authored &#8220;This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession&#8221; and &#8220;The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"hCt nGn LA B z I\"><!-- hCt nGn LA B z I --><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Levitin, Ph.D., helped produce records by the Blue Oyster Cult and he&#8217;s been a recording engineer for Santana and the Grateful Dead.
