Being prepared for the kinds of emergencies that happen here in the Midwest is important. Especially in light of the weather related emergencies we&#8217;ve experienced across the state over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p><B>What can people do to prepare for unexpected emergencies and disasters?<\/B> <\/p>\n<p>Get a kit, make a plan and be informed. Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preped.org\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">website <\/a> includes a checklist of supplies to include in your family&#8217;s emergency preparedness kit. <\/p>\n<p>Making a plan includes having an out of town friend or relative designated as an emergency contact. If family members get separated during a disaster, each person should check in with the out of town contact who can then relay information. <\/p>\n<p><B>How can I help the community at large prepare for emergencies?<\/B><\/p>\n<p>Joining the Citizen Corps is one good way to help your community be prepared for emergencies. Coordinated by the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission, the Citizen Corps harnesses the power of individuals to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters of all kinds.
