\n<\/TABLE>Thanks to Omaha philanthropists Ruth and Bill Scott, UNMC will open the Center for Nursing Science today during a 10:30 a.m. ceremony.<\/p>\n

The Scotts were the lead donors for the new center and their generosity has transformed the UNMC campus, helping power the construction of several campus buildings including the Sorrell Center and the Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health. <\/p>\n

\nTour the Center for Nursing Science before today’s ceremony starting at 9 a.m. The building is adjacent to the college’s original facility at 42nd Street and Dewey Ave. <\/p>\n

An open house for the general public will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. <\/p>\n

Today’s ceremony will be webcast on the center’s website<\/a>.

Why are you so passionate about nursing? <\/B> <\/p>\n

It’s probably my biggest regret that I didn’t pursue a nursing career. I had four cousins who were nurses and I truly envied them. I was in awe of how pretty they looked with their starched white uniforms. … I had an elevated blood pressure\/pulse and a thyroid irregularity and my physician didn’t think I would be healthy enough to be a nurse, so I became a teacher. … I would have made a good nurse. But, I also have to admit that I might have been more enamored with the uniform than I would have been changing bed pans and drawing blood.<\/p>\n

    The three key characteristics in a good nurse are competency, compassion and friendliness. Nurse Ratched in “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” she was a perfect example of what a nurse should not be. These days, it is more important than ever for nurses to be able to gain the confidence of the patient. <\/p>\n

    What do you hope comes from the new building? <\/B><\/p>\n

    I’m hoping the new building will inspire future nursing students. One’s environment is critical to work performance. The new building will provide nursing students with a true state-of-the-art facility and hopefully lead more students to choose nursing careers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
