\nThe College of Public Health had a strong showing at the recent America Public Health Association conference in Denver. <\/span>
\n<\/TD>

\n<\/TABLE>Renaisa Anthony, M.D., M.P.H.,<\/B> assistant professor in the College of Public Health and deputy director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities, received the 2010 American Public Health Association (APHA) Outstanding Leadership & Advocacy Award for Maternal and Child Health at the association’s recent conference in Denver. <\/p>\n

Also at the APHA conference, the College of Public Health<\/B> was in the top three of a booth display contest among members of the Association of Schools of Public Health. The college representation at the APHA conference included:

    The College of Nursing<\/b> also had representation at the APHA conference. Pam Jones, Ph.D.,<\/B> presented a seminar titled, “Social and Contextual Factors Influencing Tobacco Use in African Americans;” and Kathy Kaiser, Ph.D., Teresa Barry, Ph.D., Li-Wu Chen, Ph.D., <\/B> and Sheila Likness,<\/B> presented “Predictors of maternal health-seeking for low income children.”<\/p>\n

    Lori Cervantes,<\/B> manager of the UNMC optical store, helped collect and case more than 450 pairs of eyeglasses for the Sienna Francis House — an Omaha shelter for the homeless. Cervantes responded to a need at the shelter, which lost grant funding that assisted homeless people in getting glasses.<\/p>\n

    The UNMC Community Academy<\/B> and some of its student advisory group members were recently recognized as Points of Light Award recipients by Gov. Dave Heineman. The Points of Light Award honors those who have made a commitment to connect Americans through service to help meet critical needs in their communities.<\/p>\n

    Ken Follet, M.D.,<\/B> professor of neurosurgery, has been named as one of 15 members selected to serve on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Advancing Pain Research, Care, and Education. <\/p>\n

    Francie McNeil,<\/B> a case manager in the UNMC Physicians General Pediatrics Office, recently was selected to serve on the State Board of Nursing. <\/p>\n

    Larry Linfor,<\/B> campus security officer, recently received the William M. Kizer Light of Wellness Healthy Behavior Award from the Wellness Council of the Midlands (WELCOM). Using a daily regimen of running and lifting weights, Linfor was able to shed 70 pounds. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
