The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved UNMC’s request to start a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in the College of Nursing. <\/p>\n

Courses in the new program will begin in the fall at all the college’s divisions.<\/p>\n

Below, Sarah Thompson, Ph.D., professor and associate dean for academic programs in the college, discusses the new program. <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>What is a DNP, and how does it differ from advanced practice registered nurse degrees (APRN)?<\/B><\/p>\n

Most nurses who obtain the DNP are or will become APRNs. The DNP degree does not change the scope of practice for APRNs in Nebraska but rather expands education so APRNs are prepared to translate research into patient care, lead organizational change and work in inter-professional teams.<\/p>\n

What’s the benefit to a nurse of being a DNP?<\/B> <\/p>\n

The degree gives nurses a greater ability to enhance the care they already provide whether that’s through translating research into care or developing new models of care in a hospital or a community. These additional skills will enable them to be innovators, foster patient quality and safety and translate research findings for the benefit of patients. <\/p>\n

Do DNPs make more money than other nurses?<\/B><\/p>\n

Salaries are better for DNPs in some areas of the country.<\/p>\n

How does it benefit UNMC to have such a program?<\/B> <\/p>\n

It aligns with the university’s mission to stay abreast of changes in the education of health care professionals who are trained to provide the highest quality health care. In addition, these graduates will be able to serve as nurse faculty, easing the shortage of nurse faculty in Nebraska. <\/p>\n

How long does it take to get a DNP?<\/B> <\/p>\n

For students who are already APRNs, it will take one-to-two years. For students with bachelor’s degrees in nursing, it will take about three years depending on choice of specialty.<\/p>\n

How many students will be accepted in the program?<\/B> <\/p>\n

The college will accept 15 APRNs each year in the first two or three years of the program. The program eventually will expand and accept students with bachelor’s degrees in nursing.<\/p>\n
