Today we meet Alex Clarke, a high school junior in the UNMC High School Alliance.<\/p>\n

    What is your best memory from your time at UNMC? <\/B><\/p>\n

    One of my memories that was most exciting to me was when I gave myself an abdominal injection of sterile saline to gain an understanding of what people with Type 1 Diabetes commonly go through. <\/p>\n

    Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC. <\/B><\/p>\n

    For my Biomedical Research 2 class, I work with Dr. Sam Sanderson at the Durham Research Center. There, Dr. Sanderson has demonstrated outstanding commitment to excellence in his research regarding immunologic peptides. He is currently researching a peptide called EP67, which has the potential to cause a powerful immune stimulatory response without the usual inflammation. Because of Dr. Sanderson’s dedication, EP67 may be used to create vaccines for virtually any kind of disease. <\/p>\n

    List three things people may not know about you. <\/B> <\/p>\n

    • I was born nearly three months premature at two pounds and thirteen ounces.
      \n
    • As a result of being born early, I have had six operations performed — surgeries on my eyes, leg (three times), diaphragm hernia and inguinal hernia.
      \n
