{"id":37948,"date":"2011-03-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-11T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/11\/record-growth-realized-in-unmc-research-funding\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:17:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:17:57","slug":"record-growth-realized-in-unmc-research-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/11\/record-growth-realized-in-unmc-research-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Record growth realized in UNMC research funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>UNMC&#8217;s National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding soared nearly 112 percent in the last three years. <\/p>\n<p>This number is part of a report that University of Nebraska Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Research Richard Hoffmann will present today to the NU Board of Regents.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman compared the growth in NIH funding between the fiscal years 2008 and 2010 and found that UNL&#8217;s funding grew from $72 million to $94 million, a 31 percent increase, and UNMC&#8217;s funding grew from $43 million to $91 million, a 112 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"EAE4A9\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nResearch growth &#8212; by the numbers<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<UL><LI>$115 million &#8212; UNMC&#8217;s overall funding for the past year &#8212; a 15 percent increase from the year before;<br \/>\n<LI>106 &#8212; the number of UNMC researchers with NIH funding &#8212; a 71 percent increase from 2000; and<br \/>\n<LI>$700,000 &#8212; the current average amount of a UNMC grant &#8212; up from $400,000 in 2003.<\/UL><br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of the initiative UNMC researchers have taken and that the private sector has been so supportive of our research enterprise,&#8221; said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC&#8217;s research strategy has been successful although NIH funding has been flat and has lost money against inflation since 2003, said Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., UNMC&#8217;s vice chancellor for research. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen record growth the past two years, and that doesn&#8217;t include the stimulus money we received,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>During the two years of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the NIH funded $22 million for biomedical research at UNMC. The recovery grants ended in September.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC&#8217;s average annual growth rate is 7.9 percent, compared to the NIH, which is 0.8 percent. <\/p>\n<p>Several facts point to UNMC&#8217;s continued success, Dr. Rosenquist said, including:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>UNMC&#8217;s continued growth of overall research funding &#8212; now at $115 million, a 15 percent increase from the year before;<br \/>\n<LI>Between 2000 and 2010, the number of UNMC researchers who received NIH funding grew from 62 to 106 &#8212; a 71 percent increase;<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC&#8217;s average grant award has risen from $400,000 in 2003 to $700,000 in 2011; and<br \/>\n<LI>UNMC continues to excel in cancer research, while achieving high status in new areas.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how the NIH budget will be affected during the current round of budget cuts,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but I am sure that UNMC scientists will continue to compete successfully, and that our NIH support will continue to grow.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNMC&#8217;s National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding soared nearly 112 percent in the last three years.
