{"id":38539,"date":"2011-07-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-05T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/07\/05\/unmc-history-101-dr-livingston-and-the-civil-war\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:34:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:34:36","slug":"unmc-history-101-dr-livingston-and-the-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/07\/05\/unmc-history-101-dr-livingston-and-the-civil-war\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC History 101 &#8211; Dr. Livingston and the Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Several of the doctors who in 1881 founded the Omaha Medical College, the predecessor institution to UNMC, were veterans of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Robert Ramsay Livingston, M.D., who helped organize the OMC and served as the President of the Faculty (dean), as well as lecturer on the principles and practice of surgery. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/LivingstonRobertcloseup611.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt;line-height:150%\">Robert Ramsay Livingston, M.D.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>Born in Montreal in 1827, he studied medicine at McGill College &#8212; now McGill University &#8212; and later attended lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.<\/p>\n<p>In 1859, he came to Plattsmouth in then Nebraska Territory (statehood would not come until 1867) to practice medicine.  <\/p>\n<p>In April 1861, he received news of the attack on Fort Sumter and issued a call for volunteers for the union army. He organized an infantry company, which became Company A, First Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, the first soldiers from Nebraska to serve.
