{"id":38621,"date":"2011-07-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/07\/18\/core-lab-facility-helps-unmc-secure-3-million-nih-grant\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:17:35","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:17:35","slug":"core-lab-facility-helps-unmc-secure-3-million-nih-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/07\/18\/core-lab-facility-helps-unmc-secure-3-million-nih-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Core lab facility helps UNMC secure $3 million NIH grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Two leading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> scientists, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pharmacology\/fox_bio.htm\">Howard Fox, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/regenerativemed\/index.htm\">Nora Sarvetnick, Ph.D.,<\/a> have secured a $3 million grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> to learn how methamphetamine affects the immune system, especially when there is a virus infection.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The five-year grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/nidahome.html\">National Institute on Drug Abuse<\/a> was awarded thanks in large part to the support of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mspcf\/\">UNMC Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility<\/a> and its director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pharmacology\/ciborowski.htm\">Pawel Ciborowski, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The technology used in the core lab as well as Dr. Ciborowski&#8217;s own input into the project impressed the grant reviewers, said Dr. Fox, professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;Our grant reviews indicated that this core lab is considered state-of-the-art,&rdquo; Dr. Fox said. &ldquo;The fact that Dr. Ciborowski is both a scientific and technical contributor was a significant strength in getting our grant funded.&quot; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" sizcache=\"57\" sizset=\"159\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The grant highlights the overall importance of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/core_facilities.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">core facilities<\/a> to the UNMC research enterprise, said Dr. Sarvetnick, who is professor and director of the Nebraska Regenerative Medicine Project at UNMC.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;Our core facilities are truly essential to our research on this campus,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It was gratifying to see them recognized directly in this award.&quot; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><i><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 10pt\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
