Tom Tape, M.D., knew Lisa Runco was an invaluable employee long before he worked with her in internal medicine.<\/p>\n

The story, according to the chief of general medicine, goes … <\/p>\n

“My first professional interaction with Lisa Runco occurred many years ago when she was the administrator for the eye clinic. My secretary overheard my difficulty trying to book an appointment and said, ‘Let me call Lisa Runco — I know she can help you.’ Lisa called me right back and … arranged for me to be seen right away. I assumed she had been a nurse and was amazed to find out that she was a business person who possesses a lot of common sense and cares tremendously about people.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>“Years later when I was asked to interview her for the job of administrator of internal medicine, I remembered that incident and knew that she was the sort of person who would make our department shine. Now that I have worked with Lisa closely for the past four years, I am more amazed than ever about what an incredible asset she is to UNMC.”<\/p>\n

Several others, including Lynell Klassen, M.D., chairman of internal medicine, also raved about Runco in nomination letters that led to the internal medicine administrator’s selection as the Gold ‘U’ recipient. <\/p>\n

“Her expertise in administrative and financial systems — as well as her ability to be a team player — has lead many leaders in the greater UNMC community to call on her for help with strategic planning and tactical plan implementation,” Dr. Klassen said.<\/p>\n

Below, Runco talks about her work at UNMC. <\/p>\n

Describe your job. <\/B><\/p>\n

I maintain the overall financial integrity of the department, including clinical, research and educational operations. I’m the business leader for all internal medicine clinical operations and I manage and mentor administrative staff, including all IM divisions and the chairman’s office. <\/p>\n

What’s your best on-the-job memory? <\/B><\/p>\n

I can’t think of one that stands out as there have been so many rewarding experiences. Receiving the Gold ‘U’ honor is definitely a highlight and I am very grateful and humbled.<\/p>\n

What is the best part of your job?<\/B><\/p>\n

The people who I have worked with over the years, and now particularly in internal medicine, are so professional, intelligent and creative. It is a pleasure to come to work every day.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
