{"id":39448,"date":"2011-11-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-18T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/11\/18\/bad-bugs-no-drugs\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:38:39","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:38:39","slug":"bad-bugs-no-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/11\/18\/bad-bugs-no-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad bugs, no drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Here&#8217;s a scary story:<\/p>\n<p>A few years back, farmers in central China came down with a strange sickness that included vomiting, diarrhea and high fevers. <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FletcherAPR2011.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt; line-height:150%;\">Dean Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D., and other College of Pharmacy researchers are hard at work in the effort to find new drugs for new and emerging diseases. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>Their organs rapidly failed. About a third of those farmers died. <\/p>\n<p>The illness spread to six other regions of China, proving fatal in 12 percent of cases. Researchers eventually discovered that the sickness &#8212; which they named Severe Fever &#8212; was a previously unknown virus that was transmitted by ticks.<\/p>\n<p><B>Another scary story<\/B><\/p>\n<p>In 2008, about 170,000 people in the United States died from new, emerging and neglected infectious diseases such as H1N1 influenza virus, SARS and H5N1 avian influenza virus. <\/p>\n<p>Yet the Food and Drug Administration approved no new antibacterial drugs in 2008 and since 1998 has approved only 12 new antibacterial drugs. <\/p>\n<p><a
