{"id":39953,"date":"2012-02-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/02\/22\/study-finds-workforce-discrimination-prevalent-in-lgbt-community\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:19:12","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:19:12","slug":"study-finds-workforce-discrimination-prevalent-in-lgbt-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/02\/22\/study-finds-workforce-discrimination-prevalent-in-lgbt-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds workforce discrimination prevalent in LGBT community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\nAn online survey of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community in Nebraska has determined that nearly a third of respondents had experienced some job discrimination because of their sexual orientation and\/or gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe information was gleaned from a 67-question survey that was conducted through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/\">College of Public Health<\/a>. A total of 770 people responded to the survey, including 412 people from Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe information was released today as an addendum to the 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/docs\/Midlands_LGBT_Community_Report.pdf\">Midlands LGBT Needs Assessment Community Report <\/a>that was issued last June. Conducted by researchers with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/mshrc.htm\">Midlands Sexual Health Research Collaborative (MSHRC), <\/a>the aim of the community report was to assess the physical, mental, social and sexual health of LGBT persons in Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt was headed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/cfisherm.htm\">Christopher Fisher, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Public Health. Dr. Fisher was assisted by two University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty members &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unomaha.edu\/socanth\/irwin.php\">Jay Irwin, Ph.D., <\/a>assistant professor of sociology, and <a href=\"http:\/\/coe.unomaha.edu\/facstaff\/jdcoleman.php\">Jason Coleman, Ph.D., <\/a>MSPH, assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation. In addition, several community-based organizations provided assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Fisher said the incidence of job discrimination is &quot;sizeable.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\nHe noted that respondents who indicated at least one experience of job-related discrimination were more likely to have significantly higher depressive symptoms on the standardized depression scale than those who did not experience job-related discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;We cannot infer from this data that the job-related discrimination led to greater depressive symptoms,&quot; Dr. Fisher said. &quot;However, there is sufficient evidence in other studies to suggest that discrimination, regardless of where it happens, is strongly related to subsequent bouts of increased depression.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen people suffer from depression, Dr. Fisher said it correlates to increased illnesses and reduced productivity in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;Research is all about identifying issues that impact a person&#39;s health and well-being,&quot; Dr. Fisher said. &quot;Since people spend a large part of their day at work, workplace discrimination can really have a profound effect on them.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe addendum report is available at the MSHRC website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/mshrc.htm\">http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/mshrc.htm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThrough world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
