And in turn, potential students from underserved or rural communities &#8211; or who want to serve underserved or rural communities &#8211; are exposed to UNMC.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/HayleyFaber2012.gif\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt; line-height:150%;\">Hayley Faber<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><B>A diversification force<\/B><\/p>\n<p>The program is a key component of UNMC&#8217;s mission to build a strong, diversified applicant pool for the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry. Dozens of SMDEP alumni are now medical or dental students at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>Students must apply directly to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smdep.org\/apply.htm\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">national SMDEP program website<\/a>. The application deadline is Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><B>Student endorsement<\/B><\/p>\n<p>First-year medical student Hayley Faber of Omaha is an alumna of SMDEP. She endorsed the program as a great opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was one of the best things I&#8217;ve done leading up to med school,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p><B>Expanded perspective<\/B><\/p>\n<p>Faber said no one in her family is a doctor. But SMDEP not only validated her interest in medicine &#8212; it showed her why it was especially important in some communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know about health disparities or what that even meant,&#8221;
