\n“Cancer: Know Your Facts” is the topic of the next Science Café on March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th<\/sup> St. in Omaha. Attendees will hear from Chandra Are, M.D., an associate professor of surgical oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n

\nDr. Are will talk about cancer, the various types, how it is treated, and advancements made in the fight against it. He also will discuss the initiative to build a new cancer center at UNMC.<\/p>\n

\nDr. Are completed his residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and did his fellowship training in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2007.<\/p>\n

\nDr. Are is the program director for the general surgery residency at UNMC, which is involved in training the next generation of surgeons and he is involved in many international and global health activities.<\/p>\n

\nThrough these multiple roles, Dr. Are is integrally involved in the clinical, educational and research missions of UNMC and its associated Eppley Cancer Center.<\/p>\n

\nScience Café is a free educational event sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, Bio Nebraska<\/a> and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures<\/a>, Science Cafés are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.<\/p>\n
