{"id":40050,"date":"2012-03-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/03\/13\/unmc-rankings-climb-in-u-s-news-and-world-report\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:19:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:19:25","slug":"unmc-rankings-climb-in-u-s-news-and-world-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/03\/13\/unmc-rankings-climb-in-u-s-news-and-world-report\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC rankings climb in U.S. News and World Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p dir=\"ltr\">\n<em><strong><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Primary care, research and rural medicine programs notch impressive gains<\/font><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The primary care, research and rural medicine education programs at the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> rose in the 2013 <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-graduate-schools\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">U.S.News &amp; World Report<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> rankings of the nation&#039;s top graduate schools. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Of the 149 medical schools surveyed in the latest rankings, UNMC: <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Ranked sixth in primary care, up from seventh last year; <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Tied for 62nd in research, up from 66 last year; and <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Tied for 12th in rural medicine, up from 15th last year.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It marks the second consecutive year the three programs rose in the rankings. UNMC also was tied for 5<sup>th<\/sup> in the country in producing primary care residents with 65 percent of medical students going into primary care residencies.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&quot;Our continued ascension in these areas &ndash; which are vital to UNMC&#039;s mission &ndash; is great news for the entire state of Nebraska,&quot; said <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/chancellor.htm\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> &quot;As an institution, we place great emphasis on research, primary care and rural health, and it&#039;s rewarding to see our efforts recognized by a rise in these rankings.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The rankings are reported in the magazine&#039;s 2013 edition of America&#039;s Best Graduate Schools, which is available soon on newsstands. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Other programs that were newly ranked this year were: <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pharmacy\/\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">College of Pharmacy<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">, which ranked 32nd out of 125 U.S. schools of pharmacy; and <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/pt.htm\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">School of Allied Health Professions&#039; physical therapy program<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">, which ranked 34th out of&nbsp;201 U.S. PT programs.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The following UNMC programs will be included in the guidebook and\/or online edition, but were not newly ranked for this year: <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/pa.htm\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">School of Allied Health Professions&#039; physician assistant program<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">, which tied for 16th out of 130 U.S. PA programs; and <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Symbol\">&middot; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/nursing\/\"><u><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000080\" face=\"Times New Roman\">College of Nursing&#039;s<\/font><\/font><\/u><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> master&#039;s degree program, which ranked 36th out of 467 U.S. nursing schools.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The U.S. News rankings on primary care are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school&#039;s faculty, research and students. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Rankings for the health specialties &ndash; including rural medicine, nursing and physician assistant &ndash; are based solely on the ratings of academic experts. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">UNMC officials encourage students to use many sources &ndash; including rankings &ndash; when selecting a graduate or professional program. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<i><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
