{"id":40488,"date":"2012-05-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/05\/22\/training-program-to-help-post-docs-with-public-speaking-skills\/"},"modified":"2012-05-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T05:00:00","slug":"training-program-to-help-post-docs-with-public-speaking-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/05\/22\/training-program-to-help-post-docs-with-public-speaking-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Training program to help post docs with public speaking skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Registration is open for a training program designed to improve the oral communication skills of post docs.<\/p>\n<p>The program &#8212; which teaches the essential elements of effective public speaking and includes adaptations for multicultural situations &#8212; will be held each Thursday in June from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Durham Research Center, Room 1004. <\/p>\n<p><B>What you&#8217;ll learn<\/B><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the training program, participants will be able to demonstrate improvement in public speaking skills, specifically:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Knowledge of the basic principles of public speaking in a Western culture;<br \/>\n<LI>The steps in the speechmaking process, including research, preparation and practice;<br \/>\n<LI>How to adapt speech styles to the expectations of a Euro-American audience;<br \/>\n<LI>How to develop and deliver a professional presentation;<br \/>\n<LI>The effective use of visual aids to support spoken language;<br \/>\n<LI>Ways to reduce or eliminate speech anxiety; and<br \/>\n<LI>How to handle audience questions, during or after the speech.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>Between each session participants are expected to view video recordings and complete homework assignments for the next class.  An agenda will be available before the course begins.<\/p>\n<p><B>Instructor and more information<\/B><\/p>\n<p>The seminars will be facilitated by Peg Peterson, a public speaking instructor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and is open to all UNMC post docs.
