{"id":40559,"date":"2012-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/06\/05\/unmc-history-101-dr-milroy-and-his-disease\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:33:31","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:33:31","slug":"unmc-history-101-dr-milroy-and-his-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2012\/06\/05\/unmc-history-101-dr-milroy-and-his-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC History 101 &#8212; Dr. Milroy and his disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><table border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/MilroyWilliam612a.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\">\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<span style=\"font-size:0.85em;line-height:150%\">William Forsyth Milroy, M.D.<\/span>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>William Forsyth Milroy, M.D., a professor of histology and pathology at the Omaha Medical College\/University of Nebraska College of Medicine in the late 19th and early 20th century, is the only UNMC faculty member to have a disease named for him. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Milroy Disease&#8221; is described as chronic congenital or familial lymphedema of the limbs due to inadequate lymph flow through an anatomically abnormal lymphatic system.  <\/p>\n<p>The condition manifests itself with pitting and painless brawny swellings (lymphedema) of the ankles and shins.  <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Milroy became synonymous with the condition after his work &#8220;An Undescribed Variety of Hereditary Edema,&#8221; appeared in the New York Medical Journal in November 1892.  <\/p>\n<p>Although a European doctor had written about the same disorder a year earlier, the condition became commonly known as &#8220;Milroy Disease&#8221; after Sir William Osler gave it that name in his textbook.  <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Milroy was affiliated with the College of Medicine from 1884 through 1933.
