The ranks of these providers are growing thin, especially in rural communities like David City. According to the New England Healthcare Institute, the United States is in a &#8220;crisis in primary care delivery.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Bike812.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:7pt;line-height:150%\">Dr. Luckey bikes to the clinic as the sun rises over David City. He&#8217;ll be busy at work long past the time the sun goes down. Such is life for this dedicated primary care provider.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>As the number of elderly Americans increases and health care reform gives more people access to care, the shortage of these physicians  &#8212; including family medicine doctors, internists, pediatricians and gynecologists &#8212; will grow more pronounced. By 2020, the shortage is expected to reach nearly 45,000, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. <\/p>\n<p>New medical school graduates often are lured by the promise of higher pay and shorter hours in specialty practice. Physicians like Dr. Luckey, though, say the opportunity to treat a variety of conditions and to become part of a community is worth the trade-off. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">Read this blog entry<\/a> from PR&#8217;s Nicole Lindquist and follow Dr. Luckey through what he calls a typical day.
