\nGlobal mental health, sustainable water programs and planning a global health mission are among the topics that will be presented at the fifth Midwestern Global Health Conference Sept. 8 at the Michael F. Sorrell Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n

\n“Expanding Horizons: local commitment, global engagement,” is the focus of the conference, which is expected to draw health care practitioners, students and aid workers.<\/p>\n

\nThe conference is open to the public and sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center division of International Health and Education and the Student Alliance for Global Health.<\/p>\n

\nMichael Feilmeier, M.D., medical director of the International Division of Ophthalmology at UNMC, will present the keynote address on efforts to reduce global blindness. Thomas Spiegel, M.D., an instructor of emergency medicine in the UNMC College of Medicine, will discuss how to plan and execute a global health mission.<\/p>\n

\nThere are several breakout sessions including those on the benefits of immersion programs in Nicaragua and Brazil, barriers to health care access in Brazil and orphans in Cambodia, as well as a plenary session on what to expect if you take a year off from medical school to participate in global health programs.<\/p>\n

\nRegistration is $20 for students and $30 for others.<\/p>\n
