UNMC researchers procure grants from NIH, American Heart Association\u00a0 <\/strong>
\n Will study HIV, heart failure, atherosclerosis <\/em><\/p>\n

Zhixin (Jason) Zhang, Ph.D.,<\/strong> pathology and microbiology, has been awarded a National Institutes of Health grant by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).\u00a0This $450,000 award will allow Dr. Zhang to study the mechanisms that influence the gene rearrangement of immune cells in patients with HIV infections. Furthering the understanding of these\u00a0mechanisms will be helpful in the design of anti-HIV and HIV neutralizing antibodies in future vaccine design. For more information, click here.<\/a>

Karla Haack, Ph.D.,<\/strong> cellular and integrative physiology, has received a National Institutes of Health fellowship from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).\u00a0This $161,000 award will be used by Dr. Haack in her studies of the role of Angiotensin II receptor in normal cardiac function and in chronic heart failure. Geoffrey Thiele, Ph.D.<\/strong>, internal medicine-rheumatology, has received an American Heart Association – Midwest Affiliate award for $142,000 to advance his work in autoimmune diseases by evaluating the impact of modified proteins in the development, progression, and prediction of atherosclerotic disease.
