\nVince Furlong<\/span>
\n<\/TD>

\n<\/TABLE>Vince Furlong<\/B> of internal medicine-gastroenterology recently was honored by the American Journal of Gastroenterology for his extensive work with the publication. Furlong was editor of the journal from 2003 until his retirement from UNMC last month. He also served as assistant editor from 1997 through 2003.<\/p>\n

Ally Dering-Anderson, Pharm.D.,<\/B> clincal assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy, presented at a town hall meeting in Lincoln on the dangers associated with teens abusing prescription drugs. The presentation was for the Lancaster County Health Department.<\/p>\n

EMPOWER,<\/B> a UNMC student-run organization that partners with the WCA to offer services to women affected by domestic violence, will host a self-defense class on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Center for Healthy Living. Mike Kassebaum, owner of ATA Krav Maga Martial Arts in Bellevue, will lead a session that will show attendees good techniques to defend themselves. The course costs $12.50.<\/p>\n

A class of 19 scholars has graduated from the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute,<\/B> a professional development program of the College of Public Health. The program builds and enhances leadership skills for established and emerging leaders in the region’s public health systems. The graduates and their hometowns are:

  • Wisner<\/B> — Laura Holtz, Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department.<\/UL><\/p>\n

    Paul Fey, Ph.D.,<\/B> professor in the department of pathology and microbiology and medical director of clinical microbiology, is now a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). Certification by the ABMM is recognized by federal and state governmental agencies as a significant component toward meeting licensure requirements for high-complexity laboratory directors and is recognized under the final rule of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).<\/p>\n

    Karen Weidner,<\/B> director of the nursing program at Northeast Community College, and Liane Connelly, Ph.D.,<\/B> assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division, recently presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International 23rd International Nursing Research Congress in Brisbane, Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
