{"id":41855,"date":"2013-01-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/01\/21\/unmc-seeks-nominations-for-public-health-award\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:22:53","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:22:53","slug":"unmc-seeks-nominations-for-public-health-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/01\/21\/unmc-seeks-nominations-for-public-health-award\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC seeks nominations for public health award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<strong><em>Innovators in public health and preventive medicine sought<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThe dean&rsquo;s office in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/\">College of Public Health<\/a> is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Chancellor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/Sparks.htm\">Robert D. Sparks, M.D.<\/a> Award in Public Health and Preventive Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe award recognizes individuals who have shown outstanding innovation, excellence, collaboration and impact on health promotion, disease prevention and advancement of effective public health.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Sparks, who served as chancellor at UNMC from 1972 to 1976, established the award through the <a href=\"http:\/\/nufoundation.org\/\">University of Nebraska Foundation<\/a>. Eligible candidates are University of Nebraska faculty members, public health professionals or volunteers who demonstrate excellence, creativity and\/or distinguished collaboration in advancing effective approaches to improving public health.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe recipient receives $1,000 cash, recognition at the College of Public Health awards event on&nbsp;May 2, and presents her or his work in public health.<\/p>\n<p>\nNominations are due Feb. 28, and should include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nA completed nomination form with the description of the nominee&#39;s qualifications;<\/li>\n<li>\nUp to two letters to support the nomination; and<\/li>\n<li>\nA current curriculum vita or resume for the nominee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThese documents will be the primary source of information for selecting the award recipient.<\/p>\n<p>\nNomination forms can be obtained by contacting Robin Jaeckel in the College of Public Health at <a href=\"mailto:rjaeckel@unmc.edu\">rjaeckel@unmc.edu<\/a>, 402-559-2328.<\/p>\n<p>\nPast recipients of this distinguished award are:<\/p>\n<p>\n2012 &#8211; Joann Schaefer, M.D., chief medical officer and director of the Division of Public Health for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services;<\/p>\n<p>\n2011 &#8211; Mary Balluff, director of Community Health Services, Douglas County Health Department;<\/p>\n<p>\n2010- Mary Lee Fitzsimmons, Ph.D., OneWorld Community Health Center, Omaha;<\/p>\n<p>\n2009 &#8211; Susanna Von Essen, M.D., UNMC;<\/p>\n<p>\n2008 &#8211; David Palm, Ph.D., Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services;<\/p>\n<p>\n2007 &#8211; Magda Peck, Sc.D., UNMC;<\/p>\n<p>\n2006 &#8211; Phil Smith, M.D., UNMC;<\/p>\n<p>\n2005 &#8211; Ian Newman, Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/p>\n<p>\nSend nominations to:<\/p>\n<p>\nShawn Gibbs, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>\nAssociate Dean for Student Affairs<\/p>\n<p>\nCollege of Public Health<\/p>\n<p>\nUniversity of Nebraska Medical Center<\/p>\n<p>\n984355 Nebraska Medical Center<\/p>\n<p>\nOmaha, Nebraska 68198-4355<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"mailto:sgibbs@unmc.edu\">sgibbs@unmc.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates&nbsp;breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
