{"id":41930,"date":"2013-02-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/02\/04\/dr-beck-named-to-key-college-of-medicine-post\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:33:49","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:33:49","slug":"dr-beck-named-to-key-college-of-medicine-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/02\/04\/dr-beck-named-to-key-college-of-medicine-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Beck named to key College of Medicine post"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<strong><em>Named director of Curriculum and Educational Research Office<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nGary Beck, Ph.D., has been named director of the Curriculum and Educational Research Office (CERO) in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/com\/\">College of Medicine<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe appointment, which was effective Feb. 1, was announced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/rheum\/Moore.htm\">Gerald Moore, M.D.,<\/a> senior associate dean for academic affairs for the College of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Gary brings a wealth of experience and a strong background in education to the position,&rdquo; Dr. Moore said. &ldquo;He brings a unique perspective to the position which will strengthen our educational mission.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe CERO is devoted to promoting and improving medical student education and educational scholarship in the College of Medicine and UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>\nSome of the priorities of the CERO include educational research, curriculum development and evaluation, educational leadership and faculty development.<\/p>\n<p>\nAmong the activities conducted by the CERO are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nMeasuring student performance;<\/li>\n<li>\nAssisting faculty in developing or modifying methods of instructional delivery, including use of educational technology;<\/li>\n<li>\nAdvising college leadership on policies and procedures;<\/li>\n<li>\nMonitoring national trends in medical education; and<\/li>\n<li>\nAligning curriculum with accreditation standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nDr. Beck started at UNMC in 1995 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pediatrics\/\">department of pediatrics<\/a>. In 1997, he was named clerkship administrator for pediatrics.&nbsp; Upon completion of his master&rsquo;s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2006, he became an adjunct instructor in the department in 2007.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nAs clerkship administrator, he co-authored several manuscripts as well as presented original research at the annual meetings of a number of professional organizations &ndash; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/\">Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/cgea.net\/\">Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA)<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comsep.org\/home\/index.cfm\">Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP)<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.admsep.org\/\">Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asme.org.uk\/\">Association for the Study of Medical Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn 2011, Dr. Beck completed his doctorate in educational psychology from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capella.edu\/?System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection&amp;refr=\">Capella University<\/a>, an online university based in Minneapolis. In 2012, he was named pediatric education director and assistant professor of pediatrics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Beck has received regional and national recognition for his contributions in medical education.&nbsp; Among his top honors, Dr. Beck received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/members\/gea\/regions\/cgea\/255684\/past_cgea_laureate_award_winners.html\">CGEA Medical Education Laureate Award in 2011<\/a> and the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comsep.org\/home\/index.cfm\">Award for Excellence in Clerkship Administration from COMSEP<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Beck has been actively involved in medical education organizations for nearly 15 years.&nbsp; He served as the membership coordinator for the CGEA from 2002 to 2011 and was named co-chair of COMSEP&rsquo;s Research and Scholarship Task Force in 2012. He also is the administrative director for two national medical education organizations &ndash; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allianceforclinicaleducation.org\/\">Alliance for Clinical Education<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.admsep.org\/\">Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
