A residency is a training program for newly graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-nine percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training, and 61 percent of UNMC students matched in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine\/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics\/gynecology.<\/p>\n<p>\nStudents are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to the National Resident Matching Program, U.S. medical school seniors made up 16,390 of the 25,463 applicants who successfully matched to first-year residency positions.
