Thomas Porter, M.D., Hubbard Chair of Cardiology and professor of internal medicine, is a 2013 honoree of the University of Nebraska’s Outstanding Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) Award. <\/p>\n

Dr. Porter has developed a number of innovative approaches to cardiac ultrasound, to the extent that it is no longer considered just a diagnostic test but a means to deliver therapeutic interventions. <\/p>\n

He’s now moving toward using this technology to noninvasively break up clots and to deliver agents to the vascular endothelium more directly.<\/p>\n

Meet 2013 ORCA winner Thomas Porter, M.D.<\/a><\/p>\n

He is widely recognized as a national leader in cardiac ultrasound, and three companies are currently working to bring his breakthroughs to market.<\/p>\n

Below, Dr. Porter talks about his approach to research:<\/p>\n

What motivates you in your research?<\/b>
\nThe hope that we may be able one day to use ultrasound to treat patients with life-threatening cardiovascular conditions (stroke, heart attack, acute arterial or venous thrombi or emboli).<\/p>\n

What is your life goal?<\/b>
\nIn medicine, it would be to improve the quality of care we give our patients, mainly by improving the timeliness with which initial care is given. Early timing of treatment in acute conditions (like stroke, myocardial infarction), combined with rapid rehabilitation and patient education, can save lives and dramatically improve quality of life, while simultaneously reducing costs!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
