\nUNMC sponsored three events at The International, an equestrian jumping competition, at the CenturyLink on April 12 and 13. The second annual event, hosted by the Omaha Equestrian Foundation, also featured an Equine Expo that provided interactive displays, opportunities to interact with different breeds of horses and a living historical timeline from the Calvary days. As part of the sponsorship, UNMC employees and friends had the honor of presenting ribbons to the winners. \nNizar Wehbi, M.D.,<\/b> assistant professor in health services research and administration, College of Public Health, was one of eight people elected to serve on the board of directors of the National Board of Public Health Examiners on April 12. He joins public health professionals from such prestigious universities as Harvard, Rutgers and Johns Hopkins. The Nebraska Public Health Laboratory<\/b> will hold a reception today in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the state public health laboratory. This reception will be in the DRC II Commons from 2 to 4 p.m., as a part of the celebration for National Laboratory Week. The campus is invited. <\/p>\n

Kent Lacey, M.D.,<\/b> a family medicine physician in Scottsbluff, Neb., received the Marion D. and Theodore H. Koefoot Jr., M.D., Outstanding Preceptor Award in Rural Family Medicine from UNMC. The Koefoot Award was created in 2005 in memory of Dr. Theodore Koefoot and is granted to a rural Nebraska family physician who provides outstanding teaching and mentoring of medical students during their family medicine rural preceptorship and serves as an outstanding community physician. Dr. Lacey earned his medical degree from UNMC in 1979 and completed his family and general medicine residency at UNMC.<\/p>\n

\nCarol Casey, Ph.D.,<\/b> professor, division of gastroenterology and hepatology, was recently invited to serve on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Her term began Nov. 1, 2012, and will last four years. The Council advises and makes recommendations to the Health and Human Services secretary, the National Institutes of Health director and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s director on research program and policy matters.<\/p>\n

Giving cancer the boot was once again the purpose of the eighth annual Kicks for a Cure<\/b> event held April 19 and 20 at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium. A total of $310,665 was raised at this year’s event. All proceeds from the soccer tournament will go to Liz’s Legacy, a fund started in memory of the late Liz Karnes, who died of ovarian cancer in 2003. Liz’s Legacy contributes the proceeds toward cancer research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and Creighton University.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
